Athlete Leadership Programs
ALPs University

Welcome to the Special Olympics ALPs University!

The Athlete Leadership Program (ALPs) is an educational workshop-based opportunity offered to Special Olympics athletes.  The ALPs program has been designed to equip local Special Olympics athletes with the tools they need to undertake meaningful leadership roles and enact change in the Special Olympics movement. ALPs initiatives are designed to boost athlete retention in Special Olympics and to provide athletes with a novel platform to not only partake in opportunities that promote respect, acceptance and inclusion but to share this message with the world.

As athletes mature, they seek new challenges and look for ways to utilize the wisdom that comes from their life and Special Olympics experiences. ALPs workshops are designed to provide those challenges and opportunities and also provide the means to demonstrate to the larger community that our athletes have talents and interests that may have gone unnoticed before.

Through this site potential athletes, mentors, trainers and chapters will be able to register their interest to participate in ALPs University in Ontario.

Leadership Opportunities for Athletes

One of the underlying goals of the ALPs program is to provide the necessary tools to athletes to help them embark on a new journey within the Special Olympics movement.  As the leading provider of athletic and health services to individuals with an intellectual disability, we are committed to providing opportunities within the organization for athletes to not only grow as individuals but to influence change within the movement itself. Athletes  who have completed  ALPs training have taken on roles such as: public speakers for advocacy events or opening ceremonies, peer mentors, assistant coaches, serving as a board or committee member, advocates for Special Olympics and serving as a voice for other athletes.
